Sampling of heterogeneous waste or waste mixtures is a challenging task. Existing sampling methods e.g. for the sampling of bulk solids as ore, coal or gravel, are not easily applicable to waste management issues.

The sampling approach has to consider the structure and the consistency of the waste.. Depending on the material's heterogeneity an appropriate and detailed sampling plan has to be set up to obtain a representative sample. ARGUS in co-operation with the Technical University has developed a new volume-proportional sampling procedure. This procedure is extensively independent of de-mixing processes which are caused by different properties of the particles like density, form, surface or adhesive properties. Currently ARGUS is going to advance the development of this sampling procedure to allow its standardised application within a short time.
